Last Illinois county fair I went to was Boone County, summer of 1992. Let's see...

Aaron Tippin concert, demolition derby, a tractor pull, a 4-H barn with a filthy petting zoo full of asshole goats (asshole goats are awesome), vegetable and flower competitions, some shitty local country act with a frontman that looked like an even trashier Billy Ray Cyrus playing the bandstand at lunchtime that'd always work "Proud to be an American" into the set, hypnotizing (to a 10 year old) booth shops selling pocketknives and cowboys and indian and ninja playsets and firecrackers and stinkbombs and hat pins and potato guns. We got kicked out of the fair for a whole day for dropping stinkbombs off the top of the bleachers onto the sidewalk below. Almost hit some woman pushing her kid in a stroller. Half of the rides broke down in the hottest part of the day, the seats were sticky with potentially terrible things, and the operators all had long hair and played Metallica.

I'm sure as an adult now it'd be a lot less fascinating but at that age with free reign of the place it was magical.

I don't put much stock in hope. I've had people call me an optimist, but I think it just comes down to trusting myself with being able to find a way to un-fuck a bad situation at least so my loved ones and I don't come out any worse for wear. I'm not "hoping for the best," I'm just fuckin' winging it and playing life and it's worked pretty fair so far.

I can see two ways which the GOP can easily lose...
they go completely insane and nominate someone like Bachman... or (more likely in my opinion) some of the more fanatical in the tea party actually split and run a third party candidate.

It really doesn't matter who does what this coming election cycle, those of us that are more spiteful, fearful, and ignorant have purposefully - it doesn't matter whether it comes from honest intentions or not - have forced some of the most irrelevant and regressive ideals and dialogue right smack into the middle of the public consciousness, a splinter deep in the eyeball of American society that only some sort of appropriately-effective metaphor for excision could ever remove.

I post when I feel I have something to contribute, but a lot of the things I post seem to get talked around, which makes me believe that I have contributed noise rather than signal.

Same here, but I know it's a terrible cop-out, really. Why be anywhere if you're not going to do anything? I read a lot of stuff and stash away a bit of information or a question, keep reading, and it's been covered pages later. Sometimes you lot can move fast. But that's my fault, I know it, and I'm up my own ass about it. I can't force myself to come up with something completely witty or mind-blowing but I can at least force myself to come up with something relevant, which at least may show someone else a thought that they might not have had otherwise and lead them onto something.
