I find the tsunami itself to be utterly devoid of humour, but the Pearl Harbor people are another story entirely.
Maybe the difference is that the latter is human stupidity.
My shit list: Stephen Harper, anarchists that complain about taxes instead of institutionalized torture, those people walking, anyone who lets a single aspect of themselves define their entire personality, salesmen that don't smoke pipes, Fredericton New Brunswick, bigots, philosophy majors, my nemesis, pirates that don't do anything, criminals without class, sociopaths, narcissists, furries, juggalos, foes.

That is pretty represenatative of how all major Green and Environmental parties abuse nuclear tragedies, hyping worries about reactors well beyond any reasonable level.

I haven't heard the Dutch one (GroenLinks) about it yet, not on national TV and also not on their many blogs (don't normally read them, just found a site that combines many of the blogs of people in the green party). Most talked about the human tragedy, and only one said "I hope the natural disaster doesn't turn into a nuclear one as well", which is fine.

In fact, if they'd capitalize on this tragedy in order to push their anti-nuclear agenda, I think it would widely be considered to be in very bad taste.

Cultural differences, I guess. It's still going on ZDF. My gf says this is just the way German news reporting works, lots of fear-mongering, or something.

It's interesting if you compare Guardian.co.uk and Spiegel.de front pages, both leftist news sources. It's not as bad as it was earlier today and yesterday, but the difference in focus is still there (for Spiegel, AKW = Atom Kraftwerk = Nuclear Powerplant).

Actually, never mind, the more I check both pages, the more it's evening out with time.

QuoteAdmittedly, it does not help when scientists, politicians and regulators then take the exact opposite view.

A healthy respect for the real health risks while maintaining a robust regulatory model would negate pretty much all concerns, if a government had the self-discipline to not let the energy sector lead it around by the nose constantly.

Yep, no disagreement there.

I'm of the opinion that, while it would have been nice not to have any nuclear reactors, we're not exactly on track with developing alternative energy sources and as long as they don't explode, nuclear power doesn't really pollute all that much (mostly just disrupting the ecosystem by dumping large amounts of warm water in places that should be colder, afaik).

It's a good thing that most nuclear power plants have safeties installed so that during a nuclear meltdown, the core actually melts around and seals the reactive material in place. This is what's supposed to happen. Chernobyl was poorly designed.

The worse part is listening to all these idiots PRAYING for the Japanese. Fuck you and your nonexistant non-interfering deity of choice. Either you can send money for international aid or resign yourself that there's not a damn thing you can do to help. Fucking ghouls.

Chernobyl was not only poorly designed, it had the safeties turned off.

So yeah, when things are done right, a nuclear meltdown is costly, locally dangerous, and a mess to clean up, but not a total environmental disaster/carcinogenic catastrophe.

No, the worst part is the jackasses who rant about how this is "payback" for "nuking Pearl Harbor". <--- Not kidding.  Someone said that.

The situation in Japan is horrible as it is, but to imagine if something of the same magnitude happened in an underdeveloped country, or even America (which doesn't have a shining reputation when it comes to disaster management) is scary.

I'm glad that my Japanese friends and their families are all mostly OK though.

There appears to have been some venting of mildly radioactive coolant, but so far no reports of any nuclear fuel escaping.
