All they've recommended we do is change/wash our clothes if we have to go outside (like I will have to do a lot...awesome), and take a shower.  It's just  a bit unnerving anyways.

Yeah take a shower, but don't mind those TSA scanners.  Those are jes' fine!

Probably the news buttholes.

If it's CNN, Ima laugh my arse off.

I'm allergic to local news, but they may have also had their experts on telling people how to be "cautious" etc.

No.  The marines will be fine.  The evacuated everything for 12 miles around the plant.  Worst case scenario won't pose a real risk to anybody not in the plant in the short term (long term... contaminated groundwater could be really bad).

Also, marines have fairly easy access to gas masks don't they?  That cuts a fairly major amount of the risk out (even if its ends up as bad as Chernobyl (which isn't really possible, but lets give in to the panic), the biggest risk people not on the site will face is breathing in Iodine-131, which would be really bad for their health in 30 or 40 years).

Good: Japanese work ethic will see a faster recovery than if this happened to many other areas. I suspect.

Bad: japan fails at adequate treatment of mental health issues. Expecting a sharp suicide spike.

Up to 90% of people come out of disasters like this with no long-term mental issues or need for treatment.

Besides, counsellors have been sent from foreign countries have been sent along with specialist rescue teams for that 10% or so who may need help.  Along with search and rescue teams and food, they're usually considered a priority in such situations.
