If there's a way we can scan her illustrations and do a proper layout, that would be really great.

First ones ought to be done by this weekend, and I'll post.  Someone can PDF it?

For anyone just tuning in now and doesn't want to read the last eight pages here are some highlights

  • JohNyx wasn't all that interesting or annoying before this thread
  • Every response he made in this thread had a jab after it, some justified, most not.
  • JohNyx WAS becoming annoying by responding to this thread but he bowed out quite a number of pages ago.
  • The jibes continued
  • ECH and Roger started arguing about how best to handle these situations but the same issue remains, when someone presents something annoying how much do they need to be pulled up on it? JohNyx posted about five times in this thread, but there are around seven pages solid of attacks on him, is this excessive? When does it become too much.
I've been in ECH place several times over the last year or so in this exact argument and I am rather tired of it so I am not going to enter the fray this time.
But commenting on the bit ECH posted about dressing down the community I think is exactly what we need. No one is perfect and we need to be called on our mistakes no matter what, even if we are an established member of the community or whatever.

Yes, and it should be done publicly, of course, because that won't put hackles up and cause all kinds of other problems.

Also, we should do like the American Army did in the 90s, and issue "stress cards", and when a noob feels he is being stressed out too hard, he can hold up the card and everyone should stop.

Sarcasm aside, I - for one - will not be leaning on any other new people, for any reason.  I'm gonna write and perform admin functions, and that's it.
If thats what you want, don't do it on my account. I've been doing something similar and its far less exhausting.

Sweet.  Thanks.  How much does that software cost, anyway?

Also, to all involved, if this is as good as it looks, we may want to try pushing it on a magazine.  Full credit will be given, and we'll work out the money (if any), so that everyone represented gets their share.

It's what I want to do.  I'm done arguing about it, and I'm done being the bad guy.  I want to do some writing instead.  The rage machine has been decommissioned, outside of rants.

And that's the last I'm going to say on the subject.

Stress cards?

In the Army?

Seriously?

Snopes says it's not quite true; but, you know, it's Snopes. Take with the same grain of salt as the legend itself: http://www.snopes.com/military/stress.asp

All I know is that the replacements we received during my last year or so in the army were fatbodies who hadn't learned the joke yet, and got all butthurt when we did what the army does.  Some of them did in fact mention stress cards.  It might have been a Sand Hill thing.

anyway, my laptop battery is gonna die but I have tomorrow off so I'll be back to see what kind of shitstorm I've stirred up here. Anyone else that is disappointed in the direction this board is taking but doesn't want to be publically flogged for saying so is welcome to PM me with the understanding that your confidence will be kept. I'd be interested in knowing how many other members feel the same way I do.

I know this: I've received enough PMs already in the last few months about this that I felt the need to finally address it in spite of my initial attempt to not give a shit what you spags are doing with the board.

It seems that loads and loads of people are PMing ECH to explain how much they hate the board, me, and the other admins.

Fuck it.  Life is too short to put up with this kind of stuff.

Sure

Scribus is a filthy communist piece of opensource software that can do it. Sheered Volva had a lot of trouble with it when he made his Intermittens, but for just putting some text and images together and "export as PDF" I don't see what could be so hard.

Adobe InDesign is the filthy capitalist version of the same application and costs um ... WOW $699 bucks :| It is real quality software though, I can't deny that. Usually a company buys the entire Adobe Suite (includes Photoshop and Illustrator and Flash and Elements and a bunch of commercial fonts and a bunch more) for about $1200.

You can also get a trial version from Adobe.

Or get it from the torrents, which I get the impression Adobe doesn't really seem to mind because it allows young kids to get acquainted with their programs before they turn into gfx design pros that will be hooked on their software and will need to buy it.

There are also (free, afaik) programs that allow you to make a document in MS Word, and then "print" it to a PDF Printer (which asks you for a filename to save the PDF as, instead of printing it on paper). Which, if you're familiar with Word, might be the easiest way to go.

INFORMATION SO POWERFUL, YOU ACTUALLY NEED LESS.

Thanks.  I'll look into the full Adobe version.

I've got money to burn, so ease of use and reliability are far more important than cost.

Is this going to turn into one of those boards where we get public spankings by Big Daddy if we step out of line?

bullzip is a free pdf printing program. It adds a "print as PDF" option to your printer list. If you're not doing any fancy shmancy layout, and are just positioning things in MS Word or whatever, bullzip is the way to go for quick pdf output

If you noticed, this thread is now about the fabulous possibility of getting a high-quality IRL publishing of the Spiders project.

Oh, you're right, I should never respond to the content of a thread beyond the most recent post.
