What happened was in the 11th century they stopped interpreting the Koran in a current context.  Many people don't realize it, but the debate in Islam closely mirrors that between strict and context constitutionalists in America.  One interpretation says that the Law is set for all times, perfect at its conception and the other says it must change with the times.
