The media creates the standard however.  Why do people give a shit about people they have never met and have no effect on them?

Because the media creates the conditions for it.

Are you talking about celebrity worship
or wanting to wake the sleepers
or neither
or both

Good rant, Rev.

It's pretty awful out there in TV Land. I agree that it's not entirely the fault of TV producers and execs that television is a barren wasteland of idiocy. It's like this because people are easily lulled into complacency. It's like this because they're satisfied with it. We, as a culture, have bought awful television, senseless and sensational, bored and boring.

I've gotta refer again to the melioration principle - the notion that organisms just do whatever gives them the best reward. And they engage in that behavior until something else gives them a better reward. I think most people who we might call complacent are in danger because they've never gotten a reward for taking risks, or thinking about their own thought, or really caring about advancing themselves. Every venture out into the world seems like punishment - jobs that suck, awful traffic conditions, a bunch of strangers that want nothing to do with you and vice versa... Can you blame people for zoning out in front of the Happy Color Network? No one ever told them that their brains are tools they need to learn how to operate, so they've never even tried.

so is posting on message boards dude

Excuse you
MC Paul Barman

I make def tunes. Take from MF Doom and Jeff Koons. No
one left for the restrooms when I got on stage. I can rock
the mic to silence by Jon Cage with the arty flavor. I shoot
the gift like a party favor. Flip the script and makes it do
cartwheels. Feel smart, steal hearts and start meals with
chocolate. I drop gems like I got holes in my pockets.

Why talk? Heck. Oh shuck. I catches wreck like a
towtruck, silly kid. I'm iller than the Iliad and show more
than Shoah while you're so corny you've got to SOHCAHTOA.
PEMDAS EFX, the number one skirmisher. I'm in the house like
furniture, pessimist. I'll push the envelope off a precipice.
I push the envelope so hard, it goes, "Excuse you."

Take two and pass. Make you spin on your ass like a
green paint sprinkler on white grass. I'm rapping, son.
"You're not my Dad." If you think you think outside the box,
you're trapped in one.
I'm advancing the art form. Depantsing
a fart storm. Some people don't like thinking. Guess it's too hard for them.

My dope duds don't touch soap suds. I keep it realer
than a rotoscope does. I keep it more Gully than Jonathon
Livingston.

Brag rhymes have no lag times: Acrostics, narratives,
Fibbonacci challenge poems, declarative palindromes,
manifestos. My five fans can attest, yo.

Coming soon? Morse Code, Origami, Kirigami, Krikigami.
issue harsher restraints. And if I had any rhythm maybe you'd finally faint.

The way I communicate can make a dang eunuch mate. I
write first person light verse in a white hearse and I'm the
ne plus ultra of B+ culture. My goal is to make you go, "Holy
frijoles! Jesus H. Christ," where "H." stands for "Holy crap." To boldly rap into the outer reaches. This doubter
teaches defining God as aligning a divining rod with a hot
chick's reclining bod. 'Cause life is fickle. Hellish.
Anemic. Sickle cellish. Dude. You'll get chopped up like
pickle relish.

And when we perish, we're--what's the term, dude?
"Worm food."

Worm food. Friends' memories fade. You're remembered by what
you've made. So I intertwine my mind and my rhymes in a
braid. I bungie jump into my grungy dump and come up with a
trust fundy dust bunny spongy clump.

I got a terry cloth towel, a very goth cowl
And when I wear it, I'm a hairy moth owl

This is all subject to change over time and whimsy--

For months, I've been mulling over the the idea that most of humanity isn't actually conscious. Personally, I think I'm only conscious for about 20% of the day, maybe less (on average). I'd like to get that up to a good 33%. Without any pretentiousness, I do think a good portion of humanity is only awake for like 5-10% of the day, if that, and I'd like to help them. I know so many people who are depressed and miserable but lack the self awareness and willpower to DO something about it. I think the BIP is a toehold they can use to climb out. (emphasis on them climbing out, not us pulling them out)

As far as how I participate... I'm a pretty good editor, and good at critical analysis. I can produce a rant or sermon now and then, though I haven't had the time or patience in the last few weeks 'cause I'm bogged down with other writing projects. I feel I could serve The Project mostly by helping refine it and organize it towards being a final product. (I'm an assistant editor IRL)

I really do want to see us produce material that is useful to random strangers that pick it up. Yesterday, the guy sitting behind me on the bus must have read the pamphlet I left for him on the seat. I heard him make an interested "hm" noise. I would have preferred if that noise was, like, incoherent babble or laughter or hysterical screaming or something. I think this is a goal we can achieve.

Yeah, me likee. When you first said Big Brother I thought I knew what you were talking about - though you went on to prove that one shouldn't be so hasty.

I consider the BIP to be a Discordian Episkipos. It's not synonymous with Discordia, but it has a lot in common.

I agree that this particular episkopos is "in progress" -- the BIP isn't the end point, it's just a point on a line that leads somewhere else.

I've got a project idea up my sleeve, but I'm holding onto for now so I don't lose focus on my other real-life projects . (just finished the manuscript for this book... I'm in editing phase now, with the goal of print in March)

But to be brief, I think it would be a fun exercise for the commutiny to try and put together a complete product within a one-week time frame. Like the concept is announced on Monday, finalized by Tuesday, and then everyone starts submitting stuff. We'd make it our goal to have a PDF ready to distribute by the following Monday. This forces us to stay really goal oriented and make forward progress (?) without getting too hung up on semantics and tangents.
