I am lucky enough not to have been molested. I don't know how many people I know have been, none that have have confided it in me and I hope that, in fact, none have. All I have are statistics and studies and according to those most people who are molested get consequences that are not good at all, mental problems, physical problems too, problems that often last a life time.
I am sure that some victims of molestation manage to overcome these consequences and live relatively normal lives. Good for them. I'm not going to assume someone is bonkers if I find out they have been molested, if I already know they are bonkers and then I find out they've been molested I may assume that is why.

I don't know. I certainly really really don't want either to happen. I know that if she were raped and lived I'd do everything I could to get her proper therapy and whatnot so that she could live as healthy a life as possible. I can't say that's better though.
I suppose I don't know enough about child sexual abuse to really judge, it's just a big scary bogeyman in my mind and I may be blowing it up to bigger proportions than it actually deserves.

I am lucky enough not to have been molested. I don't know how many people I know have been, none that have have confided it in me and I hope that, in fact, none have. All I have are statistics and studies and according to those most people who are molested get consequences that are not good at all, mental problems, physical problems too, problems that often last a life time.
I am sure that some victims of molestation manage to overcome these consequences and live relatively normal lives. Good for them. I'm not going to assume someone is bonkers if I find out they have been molested, if I already know they are bonkers and then I find out they've been molested I may assume that is why.

If it helps, Nigel's hurt my feelings more. Mostly because you have a tendency to misinterpret things that I say in ways that don't make any sense to me. When you do that I get bewildered rather than offended and whatever humiliation, rage, or what have you would otherwise have resulted gets dissipated.
I'm assuming that is a technique that works well with a lot of other people because I've seen you do it to all sorts of people and I certainly don't think it's stupidity on your part.

I think it is a personal thing. I know there are a fair amount of circumstances where I would rather not be alive and I tend to extend those circumstances to those I love and care about. It doesn't mean I'd try to stop any of them from living in those circumstances, but I wouldn't be angry with them if they chose to terminate their own lives.

The incidence of molestation is way lower among priests than among most men, it's just that it was such a huge deal because they're in a position of power and trust and whatnot. And the way that the church covered it up was a huge unprecedented monstrosity.
