Title: ITT - COMIC BOOK NERDS ONLY
Post by: E.O.T. on February 11, 2010, 07:32:23 PM
MY DILEMMA

When it comes to comics, I mostly follow authors rather than titles. Ed Brubaker's "incognito" got me hooked on him and his noir stuff, so I caught up on "criminal" and several of his previous titles. Matt Wagner's probably my favourite comic writer/ artist, and I'm really enjoying his "madame xanadu". I'm not against the 'super hero' stuff if it's written well, but I'm kinda interested in something more original to dig into, rather than the millionth Batman story. I need suggestions for my comic addiction.

ALSO

My friend BRIAN CHURILLA has managed to get a gig as artist for a regular monthly title, with writer PHIL HESTER called "The Anchor". Totally worth checking out if you're looking for something new yourself.  It involves an avenging behemoth monk and a lot of monsters.

Have you tried the Promethea series by Alan Moore?

I'm not much of a superhero comic fan.
House of mystery is one of the best running series available. Doktor Sleepless is a strange little series by Warren Ellis on the nature of how society is changed by technology but its been relegated to about one issue every three months, I would suggest reading this based on the strength of the Doktors rants alone.

Madam Xanadu is interesting enough... If you are reading it then I assume you have read the sandman, if not, do so as soon as possible.

I've recently been reading Alan Moore's Swamp thing, I was a little hesitant at first because of the art, but it became compelling after about two issues in, I don't like making any direct reference to story for these kind of things so the best way to describe Moore's Swamp thing (and only his, avoid the other writers) is a rich blend of Horror, mysticism, mystery and romance.

THAT'S FUNNY

Somehow I came across the first two "promethea" trade paperbacks as freebees. I often find Moore to be a fantastic writer, but I had to actually force myself to finish the second book and I totally hated it. I think his whole self declared magician status and discovery of Crowley influenced the writing too much, I found it to be painfully didactic. Thanks for the suggestion though, something like "promethea" would normally totally suck me in, with all the historic literature and archive comic references to nerd out on.

ALSO

At about the same time, I came across "LORE" by T.P. Louise & Ashley Wood, which is a modern magic cabal mystery sort of thing, and it is absolutely great. The art becomes minimal to nonexistent as the story goes on, so it's pretty much all text toward the end (it was a six(?) issue limited series) - but the best thing I'd read in comics for a while. Surprisingly it's very straight forward, where their other work together like "D'airain" or "Duostar racers" is abstract, to say the least, like they collaborated on a bunch of 1-2 page story ideas, threw them up in the air and then collected half of them together, in no real order. Which is genius too, just not as fun to (try to)read.

THANKS

Really enjoyed both "Sandman" and "Sandman mystery theatre". I've eyeballed "House of Mystery" on the shelves, I'll check it out. I agree, his "swamp thing" was great.

WAIT

Standard format, B&W, self-published, with an industry geek distributing it locally, selling autographed copies on POEE, cheap.  Prices by March, release is May 1 for the first issue (double issue), then one issue/2 months after that til the story is done (10 issues).

Someone that needed an instant identity to replace the one that died.  Someone that needed non-standard weaponry.

Someone that will kill you all one day, because you didn't kill me when I asked nicely.

And Doktor Howl is actually a takeoff on my old friend Doc Howl (who posted here for a while, before his death).

He's just a tracer, anyway.

Inking is a solid bitch, actually.  Kim got so stressed doing it, she beat Von Melee with the cat.  The fat one.

Boy, was he pissed, too. Don't have to worry about the writer's cramp now.  :lulz: Got Von Melee's migraine meds to ooze it out of me next time.

I'm kinda liking the change in you, over the last week or so.

Just watch out, next time you show up I'll have a cigarette plastered to my lip and be sitting on the couch mumbling obscenities at Von Melee. But the good news? I'm prettier than Keith Richards.  :lulz:

If you get too fucked up on those goddamn pills to work, then you shan't be allowed to have them.

THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.

:lulz: No worries, Doktor. If anything I'll cram them down Von Melee's throat to shut him up.
Plus, I'm still quite capable while on those pretty blue pills, to draw.

It also occurs to me that this:

QuoteJust watch out, next time you show up I'll have a cigarette plastered to my lip and be sitting on the couch mumbling obscenities at Von Melee.

...Is hardly a new occurance.

I just realized that this is quite true. Considering he's still being a fuck up, it's my duty as a nurse to mumble obscenities at him. It's only because the boy needs a lot little abuse.

The idea of identity and comic persona has been playing on my mind a lot lately. In march of last year an army specialist went nuts and started dressing like the Joker, he was shot and killed after stabbing some guy.
In the comic books the role of batman is no longer the late Bruce Wayne, the mantle has been taken by the first Robin.
The famous actor Heath ledger was so consumed with the role of the Joker that it burned him out and led him to the careless use of drugs that killed him. The persona of the Joker KILLED him.
It has been shown that these roles of these mythological figures (because that is what they are, no different Greek gods or any gods for that matter) have little to do with the name on the birth cert. Scarface the wooden dummy/mobster continues to wreak havoc despite the hand up his ass now belonging to payton Riley.

The role belongs to whoever wants it. If roger wanted to be reborn as a mad scientist, there was nothing stopping him.

Also, some differences:

Doktor Sleepless - rich.
Doktor Howl - not rich.

Doktor Sleepless - knows that horrible creatures live between dimensions.
Doktor Howl - knows that they actually live under the Stone Avenue bridge.

Doktor Sleepless - uses massive amounts of high tech goodies.
Doktor Howl - makes gadgets to harm people that deserve it.

Doktor Sleepless - Hasn't ate or slept in two years.
Doktor Howl - Ate a FUCKING SALAD for lunch, and bludgeons himself to sleep with drugs.

Doktor Sleepless - has an assassin for a nurse.
Doktor Howl - has a crazy and violent friend for a nurse.

Doktor Sleepless - is a fictional character who wants to kill you.
Doktor Howl - is a real person that wants to kill you.

Doktor Sleepless - Has bioweapons at his disposal.
Doktor Howl - has hallucinations.

There.  I think that ties it up nicely.

AH

That fable stuff does look pretty hot, from what I've seen. I have followed some fairly ridiculous titles simply because I love the artist. I really do love a good story though, sometimes I feel bad that the artist spent so much time on all the panels because it's more atmosphere than eyecandy, if the story has me. But I guess that's like a good soundtrack, you just don't notice it as much as feel it while you're in the film. That "madame xanadu" which I mentioned earlier has most of the story art done by Amy Reeder(sp?) Hadley, and her stuff is beautiful. Some of the greatest talespinning of comic universedom are the wordless pages in "lone wolf and cub", beautiful black and white timelessness.

BUT ALSO

I started picking up the new Batwoman story arc of Detective Comics because a friend said the art rocks, which it does, sort of deco influenced layout, excellent colours - but (the writer) Rucka is too far on the wrong side of nerd to make me believe the cliche'd hipster bad girl grit.

While the art is great for the batwoman arc the story is appalling. If you are going to be reading detective comics start at 824 with paul dini's run, skip any issue he didn't write. His run is fantastic.

Really. I would consider those the archtype of super hero comics, with some of the worst case examples of what is wrong with mainstream comics, decompression so there is very little going on, overly dramatic showboating, and the writers hands being tied so that the status quo is maintained.

I've got a good list of stuff to keep me busy in the reads, especially the Warren Ellis tip. I took a look around my favourite local comic shop last night and Ellis is the sea of material to dig into that I'm looking for, for sure. I noticed he's a bit all over the place, is his stuff like "armored wars" as worth reading as his more original stuff? RE: "doktor sleepless" - a comic which within two pages has a dj playing a muslimgauze remix and a Timothy McVeigh flyer plastered outside of a club is creating a dark alley which I'm so totally walking down just to see what happens.

Hey, if you're going to read Ellis, I suggest you start with his novel ("Crooked Little Vein"), then Transmetropolitan, then everything else.  Reason being, those are the only two things he ever finished, and it gets kind of old getting into a series, and then having it just end.

i think this recent set of series isnt so flat. while the skrull invasion was kinda meh, the storyline next built on that
and they employed a writer just to do all the comics under their marvel universe into one storyline

problem that is that they have many universes that they like to play with.
orgins ultimates etc
fans get confused where the story they are reading fits in the timeline

the ones i named and not the zombie or primate universes, are in order and has a good plot

Hobgoblin replacing Iron man is maintaining the status quo :?

I have never liked anything of the ultimates universe, it started off attempting new ideas, it sold well, and then got railroaded into its own clichés which aren't that much more interesting.
Marvels best stuff of the last few years has been the stuff that got neglected or was so far removed from the mainstream continuety that it could not be tied down into any other event.
My favorite Marvel stuff of the last few years has been Annihilation (a space opera involving galactus, the kree, scrull and some other sidelined characters). It was FANTASTIC, and the reason it was so creative was that it was overlooked by the marvel execs.
The other series was cable and deadpool. I started reading C+D at around issue six or seven and was shocked at its brilliant humor and actually writing good dialog and doing the most unimaginable thing possible: making cable a well rounded stylish political character as opposed to the haughty self importance over drama that is so prevalent in marvel, or the GRITTY mess that was the nineties and rob liefield.
That comic skyrocketed in popularity and became one of marvels best sellers.
What do they do to reward the writers and fans?
Force them to tie C+D into a shitty x-men event, end the series and stick cable into a self important overly dramatic GRITTY mess and launch two badly written deadpool comics assuming the fans would eat that shit up.

Of the Events:

House of M
intriguing idea: All the mutants would lose their powers.
Actuality: Jubilee lost her powers, and everyone else lost theirs for about 20 seconds.

Civil war:
intriguing idea: A politically motivated story that is has no black and white morality villains, but rather interesting commentary on the perhaps misguided nature of secret identities. Also captain America will die
Actuality: Black and white morality story where Tony stark is dick dastardly. Spider-man reveals his identity to the world. World has its mind wiped. Black Goliath dies.

I didn't read secret invasion but I wouldn't expect much from it.
I heard from a reliable friend that World war hulk was good but i doubt it.
Dark reign has been interesting so far and I have to commend them on making norman osborn leader of the avengers and giving the Sentry a pivotal role but otherwise I'm no longer that interested, and the status quo has already been confirmed to be coming back within the next two months.
When iron man (tony stark), captain America(steve rogers) and thor reform the avengers (they are as status quo as it gets).

SOME COMICS IVE READ OR FOUND INTERESTING IN THE PAST:

V for Vendetta (this comic is the shit, better than the film, AND its full of ant-establishment crazyness)

im currently reading through the Sandman series..
its pretty fucking cool, deals with a cast of personified archetypes such as death and dream and delirium and other d words...

Tank Girl is pretty fucking entertaining to read as well!
lots of wacky detailed frames and even some random discordian type references..
(in one story the tank is about to face imminent destruction by falling off a bridge, but then,(ALAS!) the button labeled 23 is pressed and everything is fine.
SOMEHOW, everything is fine.
a button that places the events necessary for a situation to have a desired outcome (not death in this case) into action.

SYNCHROTASTIC!

Lazarus Churchyard by Warren Ellis.
Anything by David Mack-- I adore his art style...even the Kubuki series is wonderfully artistic pen work combined with a pretty cool story.

Fell WOULD have been amazing.  I Ellis may have been getting tired of trying to cram so much material in a 9 panel/page format. I liked his idea of selling a cheap $2.50 comic--I'd go and buy a weekly graphic novel and a copy of Fell for a while and now....well fuck all that.

Preacher was fucking AWESOME.

I'm kinda interested in something more original to dig into, rather than the millionth Batman story. I need suggestions for my comic addiction.

You should check out the Moskon Review (http://moskonovitch.thecomicseries.com).  It's one of my personal favorites and it really doesn't get much more original that Moskonovitch.

No, it's true. The idea of reading comics on tha web makes me sad. I'll do it though, if needs.

ALSO

Horrendous fucking love sloat(sp?) mentioned "the invisibles" on page 5. I really appreciate the input from everyone. I took a break from comics in the earlier part of this century and although I recognize most of the stuff you're all suggesting by NAME/ TITLE, I haven't gone there for whatever reason. Currently digging into "doktor sleepless" and "House of Mystery".

AND ALSO, FAUST-

On the topic of "swamp thing", I've read stuff by Nancy Collins in various places and it's a good gamble that she rocked out in her "swamp thing" gig - could be good stuff. WELL

As I've said, I really think Matt Wagner is La Bomba, but in this series Amy Reeder Hadley's art is so fucking great.

AND THAT SAID

Almost nothing is better than Matt doing the writing AND the art. Except with argument HERE, with Hadley. The following (5-6 issue) story arc with Madame Xanadu(1979-1980 "Doorway to Nightmare") creator Michael Kaluta actually brings a little limp to the throb/ rage that Amy throws down.

The upsides are it saves a tonne of money, and lets you take a chance on stuff you may not have read otherwise, but the downsides are it takes a little getting used to, and some people just dislike reading from a screen (even tho they read the internets, and lodge their complaint there wtf?  :lulz:) and if I find any cool ones, I always make sure to go buy em. games, movies and music, never. good novels and comics, yes.

You save em to your computer for later use, and you can get them from torrent sites like piratebay or isohunt. look up "new comics" and there are weekly releases, and read them using a software.

I've just finished issue ten. I'm really enjoying this. I found the first two issues very weak in terms of writing but it starts to solidify rapidly after that. I'm liking this because I have been thinking about the phantom stranger a lot since reading swamp thing and matt Wagner writes him really well. The saucy jack story was great.

HEY, GREAT

I've definitely noticed certain issues suffer/ get thin a bit 'cause he's working on "Zorro(YIKES!! idea but great story) and also a soon to hit the shelves "green lantern(wtf?, this better be good...)" ongoing series simultaneously with "Madame Xanadu". The Phantom Stranger is a great character who in his comic history has rarely had good writers.

I'M REALLY

enjoying the 'House of Mystery',  - noticing some odd content from this story which makes appearance on the P.D. board. raather interesting. Also, I like the 'Doktor Sleepless' very much, however I'm going to have to find a "lot" on ebay or something because I can't seem to find a full continuity of issues at my local joint.

Anyone looking for something to read have a look at grant morrison's  seven soldiers of victory, its seven disconnected stories that start to come together over time, some really odd experimental ideas in it that aren't very practical but are fantastic.
The highlight of the series so far for me was the subway pirates of New York who travel around in their pirate train the President Clinton pillaging the various stations they come across.

https://shop.idwpublishing.com/the-ghoul-1.html

the ghoul. by Niles & Wrightson. Wed. delivered issue three and let me tell you why I like this title so much. niles is a good writer, ok, and this story involves detective work in the paranormal - not the "in sound from way out" - but wait!! Wrightson draws the 'ghoul' character so absolutely to the story voice that you can feel the rumble in his throat when you read the words and see his face. the stories are a dash 'o sci fi with rough n tumble for grit. And the ghoul is Columbo if he were a dirty harry frankenstein's monster from the cia.
the other main character is beginning to think outside the box with a bigger gun. 'nuff said.

I'll have to get my talons on that.

As comic book TV shows go there are very few good ones, but I was really surprised with Batman: The brave and the bold.
I had initially dismissed it as altogether too childish, but after being linked to the musical episode with Neil Patrick Harris I went back and watched the whole thing to date.
Its fantastic, the tone is definitely light hearted but its writing is fantastic, brilliant humour in it and some really good commentary on why comics aren't fun any more.
In essence this is all the crazy campness of the sixties show and all the over the top magic and star battles of the seventies thrown into a big mix.

Anyone looking for a good series to read, look for Alan Moore's miracle man. Unfortunately reading a physical copy is rather difficult to do, without going into too many details this comic is the worst case scenario for legal disputes and has not been reprinted. If you have trouble finding a digital copy online PM me.

The series premise is a shallow knock off of DC's Captain Marvel, it quickly turns into a bizarre exploration of the idea of the Übermensch and the cruel divide between mere humans and the new man.

IN OTHER

comic nerdiness news, I'd like to thank alla you's who suggested Warren Ellis to me in this thread. So far, his GRAVEL story is closest to my interest but strangely(ha!) hard to find all the back issues. On one hand i do get turned off by these writers who're responsible for 23+ titles a month but he's an absolute, if not THE exception! Ellis is just a fucking great writer! I read a 4-shot "IRON MAN" series of his and he's got Tony Stark down like nobody! Also, he's not just writing a host of superhero titles, a lot of his stuff is original and all across the fucking board. The "DOKTOR SLEEPLESS" stuff does seem to be his art in an organic, crystallized form though, it just rolls.

AGAIN,

          THANKS!!

Most of the best talent WILDSTORM saw, are all doing great work now, just in different places. I think something WILDSTORM did really effectively was give all those creators/ artists more individual leverage.

It was a great starting point for new artists and writers as well, now its going to be even tougher for people to break into the comic book industry.

WAS

yes it WAS. Now maybe some of those folks will put that opportunity back out there like Jim Lee & Co. did.

OR

maybe they'll just hog all the limelight and continue to eat up all the contracts and write/ illustrate/ ink/edit 39 titles a month so they can have a chance at Hollywood picking them up. Which seems to be a fairly major factor in American comics (new limited titles) right now.

TED NOMURA & his "Families of Altered Wars"

In some ways this topic is nearly too epic to lay out here, with my horrible typing skills - but here goes! Ted Nomura is a Japanese-American comics artist who began self publishing in the mid-eighties and was later picked up by ANTARCTIC PRESS.

His "Tigers of Terra/ WORLD WAR II 1946" is an altered history where World War 2 never ended and also slips in & out of time into space age settings. This guy is an ultra gear-head nerd for airplanes, specifically focusing here on experimental aircraft of the third reich. And the plans there-of.

What he delivers, in a manner unlike any other comic you've read, is a masterful blend of Japanese comic style that breaks every frickin rule of what's o.k.

The comics are loaded with technical jargon about plane styles, UFO influenced mythology is totally applied, all his best pilots are women and giant Nazi robot tanks appear virtually on demand!

Each issue begins with a full introduction page of what he's currently into, from "Family Guy" episodes to detailed history viewpoints and arguments around political correctness. And motorcycles, and women and airplanes and women and UFO's and women. There are often several ongoing stories in each title and of course, a fan/ letter page(s) at the end. Unless you've spent time sipping model glue at a hobby shop listening to nerds discuss paint details of "jargongarble" vII this and wing detail that, you cannot guess at how nerdy this altered universe gets.

Mostly there are original characters, original versions of real characters, some historical characters who don't die when they ought to have and others who die when they didn't. Always, there are tech jabbering anime chicks who fly planes and blow up shit with tanks.

Ted Nomura also did a "Gigantor" series and of course, his "Angels 750", about a bunch of high-school girls who have a early '70's motorcycle fetish club. Uh HUH, in your dreams, TED!!

And technical manuals. There is so much nerd concept in the stories themselves that Ted has published numerous technical manuals illustrating the designs which appear/ do not appear in the stories.

and of course, aliens do (in special chronicle issues) abduct and violate in ways fitting the topic.

Good luck finding his stuff on the racks! HA! Although he's been on a (semi)major imprint since the early '90's, PREVIEWS isn't exactly pimpin him hard.

not 'nuff said exactly, but, 'NUFF SAID!!

That only ended at wildstorm a few years ago, when DC bought them.

FAUST

since you're having such a hard time letting go of 'WILDSTORM' i brought the topic up to my favourite local comic book store owner.

ACCORDING

to him, 'DC' axed 'WILDSTORM' because of financial reasons.

APPARENTLY,

the recent price hike  of more than 50 CENTS an issue was necessary to offset the FACT that NO marvel OR DC title sells well after two issues, currently. Artist/ writer/ storyline changes may cause interest, but by the third issue, everything goes down hill.

ADMITTEDLY,

'WILDSTORM' has done great shit in the past, but that's not what's going on now. Or has, for years.

CURRENTLY,

a good number of artist supported labels have cropped up, (similar to what WILDSTORM was doing) and all the hot folks are doing new stuff. The European/ American artist convergence may be the clearest example, like the label ICON.

I'D

be finding more to read on the shelves if comic book artists would SHUT THE FUCK UP about their opinions/ perspectives on real life & stop putting those thoughts in print at the back pages of comics.

MATT FRACTION

fuck off with your 12 step & A.A. - shove your 'CASANOVA' rag up your junkie ass!

JEFF LEMIRE

how many giant deer horn racks do you think I can violate your epically huge ego-expanded skull with?!

Speaking of which, tomorrow I head down to NY Comic Con, which unfortunately was merged with the struggling NY Anime Festival, and taking over the entire Jacob Javits center for 3 days.

I'm not bringing a costume, I'm not having a table, my sole purpose of going is networking. I'm going to walk around and actually play professional artist all weekend for once, instead of 501st lackey. This should be interesting. Bringing MSY with me, samples of the new book, printouts of my work from Audio Book of the Dead, Roger's Bio, and a few other goodies in press kits and gonna see what I can do.

Oh, and I'm not dressing like a scrub either, oh no. I'll be dolled up.

...In other news, I picked up issue 1 of the 4 part Deadpool Pulp series. I haven't read it yet though. I'll let you all know how it is probably later today.

COOL, HAVE FUN

Suu, and good luck pimpin tha goods! The kids and i just met rick remender at our local store, he was pushing his new titles. He'll be there. He drew us a 'wolverine' smokin a butt on a blank cover issue of the new 'uncanny x-force'. it's not really my thing at all, but he was a nice guy. I grabbed a trade of his 'fear agent', since i've read only one or two things by him, i asked him what his favourite project was. i'll get back about that later.

WHAT ELSE

did i pick up this Wednesday? The new 'madame xanadu', 'house of mystery', 'chip' by richard moore (issue #1) & 'baltimore' by mignola. i just recently started reading this guy and i just can't decide, i do like the 'b.p.r.d.' stuff a lot. i also picked up (stuff i had stashed in my box) some old 'batman' titles by matt wagner 'riddler', 'batman/spirit' by loeb/ darwyn cooke - curiously, both remender AND a store clerk were goin off about cooke. a brubaker (!!) batman one-shot  and a NEW 'batman' by BERNIE WRIGHTSON.

BATMAN?

i know, i guess i just like noir stuff a lot and good batman is great crime material

ALSO

because remender was there (mostly) for his x-men thing, ALL MARVEL stuff was half off!! i bought too much stuff.(!)

REMENDER

was funny, he talked to me about how much research he has to do because he was never really into superhero titles. tha store was dead. but it's like 90 degrees out right now. 'nuff blabbed!

NICE!

I worked under Greg Land when Cross-Gen was still in existence. He won't be there, otherwise I tend to sit and harass him and piss off all the adoring fans.

INCOGNITO

by ed brubaker. this is a new story arc, they (ed & the artist, sean phillips) took a break for a while. can't get enough of this title. weird superpowers exist in some due to government experiments, now those individuals are being reigned in. tons of carnal/ visceral motive, dark side intrigue, whodunnit/ backstabbing/ set-up/ betrayal. gristmill & goddammit heartless killing. someone sees their whole life wash away in nearly every issue!!

Bleeding cool reported the reason for it being axed is that DC want all the characters that started in DC and went to Vertigo to return. I think its a double edged thing, while I will enjoy the return of swamp thing, killing MX (best new series of 2009 according to some), is just a spiteful stupid move.

I just finished the six part firstwave comic that ended this month.
Its excellent, Batman as this green impressionable character was a little startling at first but he really played off well against Doc Savage and the spirit. Lots of nostalgic futurism going on.

Though I haven't gotten to read incognito yet I was reading Brubaker's Streets of Gotham, it was fucking excellent barring one or two filler issues.

I picked up some back issues of X-Factor at an antique store.  They were cheap and in surprisingly good condition.

I had forgotten just how good the Inferno and Muir Island Saga was.  Going to go pick up their crossover issues at my local shop this week.

replacing a 15 year collection worth of comics is expensive, but the good part is I get to rediscover all of the stories I loved as a wee lad.

Some asshole green lighted a sequel to Ghost Rider, completing the on-screen rape of a character I've loved since I was a wee lad.

Spiderman is now a half black half spanish guy in the Ultimate line, bringing out all of the closet racist comic book collectors on the interbutts.  Who knew there were so damn many of them?

I finally caught Joss Whedon's animated Astonishing X-Men series on Netflix.  Story was ok but what I really came away with is that I really, REALLY hate "motion comic" style animation.

I also caught the Warren Ellis Iron Man series Extremis and the writing on it was fantastic.  Really good story.  So good I hardly bitched at all under my breath at just how fucking ugly the animation was.

Damn, I didn't even know they had made a motion comic of astonishing.

I finished Garth Ennis's run on Hellblazer last night. Every book was excellent. Better work then preacher in my opinion, a lot less slapstick anyway.

I remember reading Ennis' first ever strip, 'Troubled Souls' when it first came out in Fleetway's  'Crisis' back in  ''89, and thinking he was going to go a long way.  At the time, I think Crisis was only running two stories at a time, the other being Pat Mills' "Third World War". But Ennis has been consistently churning out work of exceptional quality for the last 22 years. He even had two controversial titles (True Faith, and Skins) withdrawn / cancelled by Robert Maxwell personally. (Fleetway's then owner)  I got his "303" for about a quid a couple of weeks ago, in a Tat shop.
