So... Restrict the ways a woman can get insurance to pay for an abortion... And when in desperation, she resorts to deliberately overdosing on pills to force a miscarriage, arrest her, charge her, and threaten her with a fine of up to $5000 (which she obviously can't afford) and up to 5 years in jail... Taking her away from the children she DOES have.
I do fucking hate people sometimes.

I need to ask for the day off work, so I'll need to know when I must report for mandatory insemination. Also, will I be able to choose the father, or will one be chosen for me? Just curious.

You will be required to wear a miniskirt and 6-inch pumps, which will signal that you are indeed "asking for it", at which point men will justifiably be incited to assert their virility upon you.

Idaho is a magical place where embryos can actually speak English, audibly, through the mother's uterus.
People who fight for the rights of the unborn are hiding their heads from the atrocities committed against the born.
That's the other thing that gets me too.
What do these people mean by baby? You can't abort a baby anymore than you can kill a chick by breaking an egg.
I hate how they intentionally muddle the language to try and garner sympathy for a clump of cells that doesn't even have a brain yet. You don't even abort fetuses. You abort embryos.

Amazing how easy they find it to stand up for the unborn, yet there are still over 125,000 children in the American foster care system awaiting adoption. (There were over 580,000 children in the system... Data is as of 1999, which is the last I can find, which is bloody disgraceful, IMHO.)

Not to sound combative but that's a bit of a simplified statement.
Despite watching for decades (70+ years) as the same political party fraudulently "won" elections and gave political favors to supporters of the party, the population at large made little effort to remove the PRI.
It's only been in the last few decades that there's been any real move to take PRI out of power and provide some level of check and balance that should have already existed given the system of government since the Revolution. I think we'll see a lot more positive changes come about by having real competition in their political process and a very enthusiastic youth movement. And foreign investment capital returning to the country after their last major crisis should be seen as a good thing.
Change probably will happen slowly, but fixing nearly 3/4 of a century of systemic corruption at all levels of government is a lot to have to reverse.

I didn't really make that qualitative of a statement on the American dollars being funneled into Mexico. In point of fact, I've always been very PRO-American support of the Mexican economy. For those who complain about Mexicans working "our jobs" over here, I've usually replied that I think we should do MORE to improve Mexico, so that it continues to improve.
Yes, I stated an oversimplification, but it doesn't remove the fact that the majority of Mexicans are still 1) poor 2) uneducated 3) malnourished, and that luxury items are still bought there cheaply by Americans, and luxury services are still obtained much more cheaply over THERE than they are HERE, and USUALLY at the expense of the very poor. Even if they're not available, for whatever reason, to the average Mexican citizen on the street.
I think investment in Mexico is a great thing, a wonderful thing. And I totally believe and know well that the corruption in Mexico's government is rife. AND I totally think government, the drug cartels and big business IN Mexico is to blame for the continuing plight of the average Mexican Juan.
I'm frustrated that Roger characterized what I said as "all Mexicans want is $$$" because that's not what I meant. I meant that your average hard-working yet still poverty-level guy in Mexico can't get in goods and services what your very-average American Joe CAN. Because the powers that be in Mexico set it up that way.
What I meant by those who are disenfranchised by OUR states' laws and can't get what they want will come to Mexico to get it, and get it cheaper, than they can in Mexico, because though its own citizens might be denied access to it, unofficially and with the proper bribes, your average Westernized citizen won't. Right now, there's plenty of our elderly and retirees down in Mexico getting cheap-ass (for us) premium health care at privatized hospitals. Health care that would cost them tens to hundreds of thousands here. They've made whole retirement communities along the Mexican coastline for this purpose. You think the average Mexican "retiree" has the best health care they can get?
Will someone PLEASE tell me where this, what I'm saying above, goes wrong? Aside from the usual "you're making assumptions, blah blah"? Living on the border as I do, and the amount of people I see who hail from Mexico proper, day to day, sort of makes me feel like I know this situation pretty fucking well.
Whatever. I don't have time for this. Right now, it seems:

A fucking box on the porch?
:vom:
What DOES one do with something like that? Idaho, in January, the ground would be frozen, no way to bury it... Toss it in the garbage?
Take it to the doctor and say you aborted it in the toilet, here it is. Better than them finding it on her back porch. Or yeah, probably the garbage, but discovery of the fetus could still have been made. I'd have taken it to Planned Parenthood, even if I had to cross state lines to do it, or something like that.
Fuck Idaho.

Why, yes, after a chemically-induced abortion (do you have any idea how sick she would have made herself to abort?), I'm sure she was all full of piss & vinegar to go out and hack a hole in the frozen ground.

The sale of black kohosh is going to SKYROCKET. (And the sale of similar herbs, until they are outlawed.)
I wish they would let me yank my reproductive bits but since I'm only thirty and don't have any kids, they won't because it's "not in my best interests".

First let me just say that I'm "pro choice" Hell, I'm pro abortion, and if you don't think you should put another person on this planet and become pregnant, then I think you should be provided the option to terminate the pregnancy free of charge. Subsidize the procedure at the federal level. (BUT WAIT AREN'T YOU LIBERTARIAN?!?! :lulz:)
Better we be still allowed to choose ourselves than get to the point where the state decides for us because we can no longer support the population.
That being said, this woman clearly has great decision making skills if she already has 3 children she's likely struggling to support, has MORE sex without birth control (speculation, I know, but really.. if even ONE of those children was conceived in spite of using even just a condom, she's beat some pretty fucking long odds.) and then puts her other children at risk by leaving the damn thing to ROT IN HER HOUSE before moving it to the back porch. She should have called someone.
Her children should not be punished for her bad decisions, but they will be now. She should have called the guy who got her pregnant or barring that, got help from her sister for the remains, called an ambulance, done anything but leave it to rot. Hell, her sister bought the damn pills for her, where was she when it was done?
I know I'm going to get shit on for this post and we'll have to just agree to disagree but I'm finding it difficult to have sympathy for her after the box thing. Leaving rotting flesh (call it embryonic, call it human, doesn't matter), to ROT IN HER HOUSE (I don't think I can stress that enough) puts her children's life and health at risk, but clearly that wasn't a concern for her.
I want to side with you on this Rev. She obviously needed some help, realized she wouldn't be able to support 4 children. I get that, I really do, but it's pretty clear she really needed more help than that if her solution was to bag it up and leave it in the house.

My initial kneejerk reaction to this was, "You're a fucking idiot."
Then I considered it, considered that the woman knew she couldn't take care of another child. Considered what she probably went through leading up to being forced into this situation by antiquated, religious driven laws ans self righteous rich idiots. Then I considered that due to the pills, she probably wasn't able to even think straight. Then I realized that she simply failed to live up to your fucking morals.
Then I decided that you're a fucking idiot.

More help? This lady has been "helped" about as much as is possible without handing her over to the WBC for summary burning at the stake.
State/Local help gets her in prison.
Her sister worked out really well.
The man who knocked her up? Was he there?
This is the wonderful world of back alley abortions that we got rid of in 1972. It's back.
But it's easier to get outraged over a frozen chunk of biomass than The Law, right? Right right right? It's all about personal responsibility, and if we have to have a million women in jail to make it happen, isn't that a small price to pay?

Of course, the problem with that is that bodies exposed to extreme cold tend to rot and spread germs, and it would kill off all the baby polar bears.

Now, not personally being in that 99.995% it is easy fro me to forget such things.
What concerns me most, is what is global warming going to do with the ice floes? When they are all gone what will we do with people like me who need to be used as an example of bad things?

I'd also like to point out to DP that in reality, the failure rate of condoms if they're used perfectly is around 3 or 4%. Normal use yields a failure rate closer to 10%. Not really that difficult to get knocked up in spite of a condom if you're having sex regularly during your ovulation window. Especially if the father is likely some backwoods dickwit who probably just made a show of opening the condom wrapper before tossing the whole thing in the ashtray and raw-dogging it until the cows came home.

What's going to be awesome is when people with PCOS and similar issues start having more spontaneous miscarriages because all manner of birth control are taboo. Roger: I'm not talking about land ownership. I'm talking about obtaining goods and services over the border that are cheaper in Mexico at the expense of the average Mexican.
So I'm not sure why you are disagreeing with me.

If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Noted that dissenting opinions are unwelcome at PD, at least according to Nigel.

I AM the dissenting opinion at least half the time. What, can't defend your position? Gotta play the whiny oppressed bitch card? SACK UP, PITIFUL WEAKLING.
If you can't defend your position using actual logical arguments, at least have the scrotal fortitude to accept that your shit got manned down. I mean, I do when I'm full of shit, and I don't even HAVE scrotes.

I'm sure people who want to adopt don't necessarily view humans as commodities. Note that it's always "someone" who wants to adopt, you never hear an anti-choice protester say, "please don't abort that baby, *I* will adopt him or her."
Rather, I wouldn't want to hand off an infant to prospective parents who only want a perfect, brand-new human, rather one with a few years and problems pre-installed... Babies don't grow up into perfect humans because their parents (biological or otherwise) have read all the right books and do all the right things, and anybody hoping to adopt the "perfect" child that they can grow up into the perfect, dutiful son or daughter is so detatched from reality that I'd consider them a danger to that kid.

The ease of the procedure has absolutely nothing to do with it. The new procedure for women is non-surgical, non-invasive, and is also an outpatient procedure. It's that doctors won't sterilize young women who don't have kids, but have no problems sterilizing men in the same situation. It's a pretty fucked up double standard.
It makes NO sense. Reversible sterilization regardless of gender should be a basic right, and it should be a free procedure that would be recommended to people until they WANTED kids.

I don't think the issue is with adoption, at least in my eyes it isn't. My boys' godfather is adopted and if I ever wanted more than two children I would have adopted. A girl I used to caretake for was part of a family of special needs kids adopted because the mother wanted to give children with special needs a loving home. I've been a foster mom, unofficially I admit but the teenager was placed with me by CPS and she's still like a daughter to me in many ways. The problem is that there are people out there who want kids and can't or won't have them, but will only take brand new babies when there are thousands of kids out there who need a loving forever home.
I don't know your story, but your birth mom made the choice to let you go to a family that could care for you. Some mothers wouldn't be able to make that choice once they had the child so the choice is to abort or to keep the child. If they know they can't manage a(nother) child for whatever reason then abortion makes sense, but the situation here is abhorrent. She should have been able to go to a doctor and be taken care of during such a hard emotional time rather than resorting to what she did. Beyond that she ought to have had the support network to take care of her during and afterwards so that she wouldn't have been left alone with no idea what to do after it happened. I don't agree with the her choices after the fact, but at the same point I have never been in that situation and it was obviously a desperate choice and a desperate decision. I have no idea what I would have actually done if I had been in her shoes in that state.
The whole story makes me sad that anyone would ever end up in such a horrid position from the get go.

True. However, if these parents that "really want a child" actually really wanted a child, they'd've adopted one already. There are THOUSANDS of children in the system waiting. The objection isn't to adoption, it's to the concept of forcing women to carry children to be adopted by people who have failed to adopt the kids who are already in need.

So... Force women to have babies so other people can adopt... The people who HAVEN'T adopted the over 100,000 kids sitting in the foster care system waiting for parents, because all these paragons want to adopt is cute little babies...
Riiight.
Yes, exactly. Not to mention the wisdom of handing a kid over to someone who views human beings as a commodity.
There's nothing wrong with wanting to adopt a baby if there's one available and you find him/her.
I was adopted.
I know a lot of people who were adopted and have great parents. But in this case I'm talking about those particular stupid little bitches.

It makes NO sense. Reversible sterilization regardless of gender should be a basic right, and it should be a free procedure that would be recommended to people until they WANTED kids.
For reversible sterilization for both sexes to be a right, first it would have to exist. Unfortunately, sterilization methods currently known to medical science are not easily or predictably reversible.
Didn't they just invent an easily reversible sterilazation technique for men?
I don't know about one that's available. Link?

Yes this! Thank you.

Very promising...
I have to wonder, though, not having the equipment nor the mindset that goes with it... Gentlemen? Would the "they're gonna shove a
needle in my
junk" factor put you off considering this?
To be honest, it would worry me more if the injections were directly into the penis. The scrotum, not so much....but then again, I live in mortal dread of ever having children, since I'm far too irresponsible to ever bring one up. So it seems a fair trade as far as I'm concerned.

Nope. If it were offered here I would gladly have it done.

A needle hurts for a couple seconds, which as I see it means you're actually saving at least 18 years of pain.

I would never give up the years I spent raising my kids. At the same time I would never go through it again. They say the first time you jump out of an airplane is always the easiest.

This needs to be shoved in the faces of people who complain about parents wanting children.
If they want them that badly, they'd have them, there is an overabundance of children in need of adoption.
Adopting in the US system is difficult, but far from impossible, and if you don't want to deal with the various hoops and fees to adopt an American baby there is also a huge overabundance of third world babies that need to be adopted.
Shame on you. Everybody knows third world babies are soup stock.

I've had a vasectomy, which involved not just a needle (for the anaesthetic) but also actually poking around in there with a scalpel, so in my case no, that would not be a problem at all. I think for most men it's a more attractive option than a vasectomy due to being less invasive and reversible. Whether it compares favorably to a condom or not depends on your sexual activity. For casual sex you need a condom anyway, for a guy in an exclusive relationship it's gonna look a lot more attractive.
