Whether you happen to like it or not, everyone1 is wrong now and again. Even I, the brilliant & horrible Doktor Howl, have been known to spout a truism now and again. The question, of course, is how you REACT to being wrong.
The general instinct of primates is to dig your heels in and start screeching. There's a reason for this...In most primate societies, admitting that you were wrong is interpreted as beta behavior, at least on a subconscious level, and thus leads to a perceived threat to your chances to mate. That sounds silly, but it's how it works.
However, by virtue of you reading this, you are not in one of those societies...Discordians tend to value The Truth™, by which I mean "The way the universe IS, not how I WANT it to be.". This almost always comes up in threads about "magick", libertarianism, goldbuggery, Ayn Rand, "real" discordianism", the free market™, and drugs, but is by no means limited to these topics.
So when you start the chest pounding, teeth-on-display , screaming that your pet theory or "fact" is right, in the face of valid contradictory information2, there are three perceptions of your behavior:
You (forebrain): "I'm going to show these guys that they're not so hot, and that I know what the fuck is up".
You (hindbrain): "If I can make my case, I will get laid with the women here."
What we hear you saying: "Please Mistress Nigel, hammer that yam straight up into my guts!"
This may seem straightforward, but it's going to bother you on the level at which you are wired...Your primate/pack animal drives. If you can't overcome those drives, you are probably in the wrong place, and should instead find a board that agrees with your worldview.
The next problem a lot of people run into is knowing something is incorrect, but arguing for it anyway, on account of the fact that the universe SHOULD be that way. It isn't. Shut up, or kill me, because I don't want to hear it, and nobody else does, either. This sort of shit falls under religion, and we are men and women of SCIENCE.
Then, there's the trap of being neither right nor wrong. If you have made a post in which no actual idea - no matter how simple - is conveyed, then, while you are not wrong, you aren't right either, because there's nothing to be right about. Anyone who's ever watched a sitcom knows what I'm talking about...As does anyone who has been subjected to "word salad"/dadaism, also known as "chaotic gibberish" or "stream of conscious zaniness." If you MUST post this sort of garbage, please limit it to one thread, so the rest of us can give it all the attention it merits. Your timeless prose is not improved by being posted on every thread on the forum.
So, to recap: If you can't prove your case, but your opponent can, you should probably at least try to look at it from another point of view. If your post is just intentional gibberish with no idea embedded, do it in private and for God's sake wash your hands afterward.

Nigel's done it, Suu's done it, Cain's done it, everyone has. Also, RWHN is at a stage in life (kids at a certain age, etc), where he will suddenly feel that he has to stop fucking around. Monkey logic, of course, but that's how The Machine works. Because he feels he has to be serious (about a cause, his career, etc), he will naturally look down on people that still act like asshats. Again, this happens to everyone eventually. Paes comes to mind, here. I was mad at him from his flounce announcement until very recently, when all of the above occurred to me.
RWHN will get over it, or he won't. I still like him and respect his views on many things, but he and he alone wrote his flounce, and he and he alone will have to decide if and when he'll come back. If and when he does, I'll welcome him back and forget this never happened. If not, I'll trip across his threads once in a while (particularly ones like "In the end, they had to wheel him out"), and remember him, the same way I remember guys like Peacock...You know, a talented guy that I used to know, whom I lost contact with.

I have said "I think X about people who believe Y" and people have assumed that I was talking about THEM and accusing them of believing some vile thing. But I was trying to leave an out, because if they don't believe Y, I don't think X about them. Trying to leave some room to state my opinion without pointing a fucking finger at anyone, yet the finger gets written in regardless.
I just tend to assume that those must be the people I'm talking about, and act accordingly.
Mostly it's just more fun than assuming that peoples' reading comprehension is suffering a temporary setback.
I have to say that the general tone and even composition of the board hasn't changed as much as people believe it has. Sure we have different conversations now, and many of the faces are different, but the "feel" of PD for me hasn't ever changed dramatically and always seems to find some kind of equilibrium.
That said, when people flounce for what appears to be little reason, then it would appear to me that it's at least 50% their problem rather than the board in general. The problem may not be entirely invalid, of course, but PD is what it is and you'd think that if you've been here long enough to have an official flounce then you've seen enough of it to understand PD.
I love RWHN like a brother, and hope he brought his punglasses with him so when he (inevitably) comes back, he can stroll in looking Cool As Fuck.

I agree and disagree. Repeated discussion exists and we do tend to have five or six specific topics we always return to, and we also tend to cover much of the same ground that isn't pinned down by one definite topic too (ie: certain conversations we can have about say, politics, that will rehash things that we've already said about politics).
But then we have spontaneous projects like the Nessies thread, and the introduction of Horrorology. There is change and new ideas coming in all the time.
A particular way to reference this evolution of posting is the massive reduction in pointing people in the direction of the BIP in the last couple of years. Some of the things that we are saying are roughly the same, the direction they take us is different.
I know, I was also partly just poking fun at ourselves.

Would it be possible that once someone hit obvious troll, obviously not going to contribute to admin them with some sort of label that makes all of the forums except the troll forum invisible? They'd still be able to see stuff if they logged out, but wouldn't be able to interact with anyone except in the troll dome.
